Again, I’m Proud of UNC

Dorm name honors slave – University

UNC has been conscious of its history as a white institution in the South, and what that may mean for people of color. And, UNC has made strides in promoting all aspects of its history. The renaming of Hinton James North Residence Hall after George Moses Horton is yet another step in the right direction.

On February 7, I could say that I was proud of my alma mater because we beat Duke. Today I can say that I’m proud for a different reason.

  1. there are no racist posts on the DTH article yet. surprising.

  2. Glad to see that somebody is interested in reflecting upon and honoring their university’s past. I can’t say that Wake will ever get to the point where they rename a dorm or any other facility after a slave, or any other black person for that matter…unless, of course, someone forks over the necessary dead presidents.

  3. Well that’s partially because being a public school, UNC has a greater obligation to acknowledge ALL of NC’s role in its presence, past and future. But don’t be discouraged. If black people do something big enough at Wake that merits a naming, it can happen.
